What score do you intend to settle? How do you intend to go about it? The Master’s mindset is clear; he is condemning the vindictive anger that would unjustly desire the death of another by putting himself or herself under God’s judgment. Anger is a dangerous emotion that threatens to leap out of control, leading to a physical and verbal violence, emotional hurt, increased mental stress and other destructive results. There is spiritual damage as well. Anger keeps us from developing a spirit pleasing to God.
The Bible does not tell us not to feel angry, but it points out that it is important and very necessary to handle our anger properly (Ephesians 4:26-27). If vented thoughtlessly, anger can hurt others and destroy relationships. If bottled up inside, it can cause us to become bitter and can destroy our mental, physical and spiritual health from within. We are expected to deal with our anger immediately in a way that rebuilds relationships instead of destroying them. If we nurse our anger, we give Satan foothold in our life. This is one of the main reason we have an injunction in Matthew 5:23 that if you are standing before the alter, offering a sacrifice to God and suddenly you remembered that your brother has something against you, leave your sacrifice there, so that you can go quickly and settle your scores. Be reconciled and after that is done, you can come back and offer your sacrifice to God.
Please I will admonish you to keep calm and control yourself when next someone offends or stir up anger in you most especially your wife, children, co-workers, fellow Christian and other close associates and relatives. And please don’t fail to control yourself when you are insulted or annoyed because great blessing will be yours (Proverbs 12:16).
