Billionaire financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein died early Saturday morning in an apparent suicide. He was found in his cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Manhattan where he reportedly hanged himself, according to ABC News. Epstein was indicted earlier this summer for reportedly running a child sex-trafficking ring for wealthy and high-profile clients out of his Upper East Side home.
Epstein's death comes just one day after a massive trove of documents previously-sealed legal documents were made public on Friday. According to the New York Times, those documents give the clearest picture yet of the scope of the allegations against Epstein, detailing what went on inside his home and how his associates recruited young women. Per the Times:
The documents — among the most expansive sets of materials publicly disclosed in the 13 years since Mr. Epstein was first charged with sex crimes — include depositions, police incident reports, photographs, receipts, flight logs and even a memoir written by a woman who says she was a sex-trafficking victim of Mr. Epstein and his acquaintances.
That alleged sex-trafficking victim, Virginia Giuffre, claims that Epstein turned her into a "sex slave."
Late last month, Epstein was found unconscious and with marks on his neck after he was assaulted in his cell by former police officer Nicholas Tartaglione, who was being held for murder charges.
