The lawyer to the family, Rasaq Balogun, who said a petition had been sent to the Inspector-General of Police, demanded investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deceased’s death three hours after he was arrested and taken into custody at the station.
It was gathered that the deceased had travelled to Ota, Ogun State, to visit a friend and was arrested on July 19, 2019, following a complaint of assault by a phone seller.
According to the police, Obi was taken to the Sango Police Station without any form of resistance.
In the process of interrogation, he was alleged to have suddenly become irrational and was subsequently restrained by handcuffs.
Within a short period of time, it was alleged by the police that the deceased became so irrational that he removed the handcuffs and picked up a long axe from the interrogation room and went outside the station to destroy vehicles.
In a minute and 19 seconds’ video, which made the rounds on the social media, the victim was seen in the pool of his own blood, having been shot by policemen at the station.
Some police officers were also heard in the video calling him names and declined his request to speak with his father before he died.
Balogun said the deceased was not accused of committing a capital offence, adding that he was not armed and did not resist arrest.
“Even if the deceased student was armed or resisted arrest, was shooting him the only option to get him restrained? At what point did he become so irrational that he was stripped to his pants as shown in the video clip, which went viral?” he queried.
The lawyer debunked the earlier statement by the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, that the deceased was a cultist.
He urged the IG to set up a proper investigation panel to look into the matter and bring those culpable to justice.
Oyeyemi had said the officer, who shot Obi, acted in line with Force Order 237 since the suspect was armed with an axe and was aggressive.
He added that the deceased was immediately taken to the Ifo General Hospital, where he died.
When the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, was contacted, he said he could not confirm if the petition had been submitted, but added that the case would be investigated in line with the police’s constitutional mandate.
“The police owe the citizens the responsibility of investigating every petition sent to the force. So, if indeed the petition has been submitted, in line with our constitutional mandate, it will certainly be investigated,” he stated.
