Ms Warren came under repeated criticism from 11 other candidates on how she plans to pay for her ambitious proposals, including her Medicare for All plan.
She has been gaining momentum and has been ranking high in favourability polls, which made her a new target in Tuesday night's debate.
While other moderates have been pressing for a measured approach, Ms Warren and Senator Bernie Sanders have suggested a government-funded overhaul of the insurance market.
However, unlike Mr Sanders, she has still not divulged whether she would have to raise taxes on the middle class to pay for the ambitious plan.
"At the end of the day, the overwhelming majority of people will save healthcare money on their bills, but I do think it's appropriate to acknowledge that taxes will go up," Mr Sanders said during the debate.
The comment received praise for "at least being honest" on the tax increase from US Senator Amy Klobuchar who added, "I am sorry, Elizabeth, you have not said that and I think we owe it to the American people to tell them where we are going to send the invoice."
