Northern City News gathered in Minna on Sunday that the policemen, who were in the patrol van, were on their way to the police headquarters to hand over to the next team when the incident occurred.
It was learnt that the hoodlums, suspected to be motorcyclists stationed close to the market, took the law into their hands and attacked the patrol team.
In the process, three police personnel were mobbed and the patrol van set ablaze.
In the melee that ensued, the driver of the articulated vehicle escaped.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mohammad Abubakar, confirmed the incident, saying that the operatives apprehended 16 suspects and impounded 20 motorcycles.
Abubakar said, “We cannot allow hoodlums to take over Minna and its environs. We are on top of the situation; those arrested will face the full wrath of the law.
“The Commissioner of Police, Adamu Usman, has warned the Niger State chapter of the Amalgamated Commercial Motorcycle Riders Association of Nigeria against any act capable of disrupting the peace of the state. The command will decisively deal with anyone caught or linked to mob justice and any form of criminality in the state.”
The spokesman said the driver of the police van and the two other victims were currently receiving treatment at the Police Clinic and the IBB Specialist Hospital, Minna.
