Twitter Neitizens Attack Pete Edochie Over Unusual 'Marital Advice'

Legendary Nollywood actor, Pete Edochie, is currently trending on the Nigerian Twitter space due to the marital advice he dished out to women whose spouses are unfaithful.

The actor had shared a video on his verified Instagram account where he advised women to put condoms in the bags of their husbands if they suspect him of cheating. 

 Edochie said, “A lot of you right now are not in your husband’s house. You say that ‘he was cheating on me’. Solomon, I think, had about 1000 wives and 700 concubines. If your husband is cheating on you and now decides to take many more wives, what are you going to do? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. 

 “If you think that your husband leaves the house and says that he is going on tour and he is going to have an affair outside, put a packet of condom into his bag; tell him that you have packed his bag for him. When he sees it, psychologically, he is going to think ‘this woman has my interest at heart.’ If it is his intention to stray, he will put himself together.

 “The thing is that you women are not creative; you want to be like white women who keep marrying and divorcing and marrying. It does not suit us; it does not go down well with us. No.”

 The septuagenarian, who celebrated his birthday about two weeks ago, has been married for over 50 years. In the video, the actor noted that men of today are “weak”. 

Edochie said, “I am not chauvinist, I am not misogynist, and I am not sexist. If you drop your father’s name to answer the name of your husband, you are bound to be submissive to him. How can a woman go out of the house in the morning, come back in the night, reeking of alcohol and the husband wants to know why she is late in coming home. And what does she say, ‘if you know what is good for you, just get out of my way let me go and sleep.’ 

 “Well, they can afford to say that today because the men of today are very weak. If you said it in our own time, you would never be in one piece again. I mean every word of what I am saying. We got married when men were men and women did not insult us that way.

 “The way women insult men nowadays, I begin to imagine; it is not our character, what is going on. Our women used to be beautiful things we love. We loved to hold and cuddle. What is really going on?”.

 His comment has elicited different reactions on the social media platform. While some believe the septuagenarian’s utterances are wrong and insensitive, others opine that the actor’s words should not be taken too seriously. Giving his two cents on the actor’s statements in a series of tweets, popular Twitter influencer, @DrOlufunmilayo, note, “I think they need to stop interviewing Pete Edochie. Especially on social issues. The man is 74. His generation is entirely different from ours on social issues and gender matters. Continuing to interview him is setting a trap to ridicule him and ruin his memory for all of us. 

 “Let’s show the man some grace. Some of his ideas are bound to be old-fashioned. If you never insult your parents/grandparents who may say the same thing, why are you crying about Pete Edochie? Your outrage won’t change the man. You are wasting your tears.” 

 Making light of the matter, a Twitter user with the handle, @Feyipatts wrote, “Pete Edochie is a 70+ Igbo man. Hold this information with your left hand before you go ahead and rile yourself up for no good reason.” 

 

 taking sides with the veteran actor, OLA SANDRA OTIS via her handle @Olakhisha, opined, “Pete Edochie is right. I’m not leaving my “home” because of another woman. Lol… I will only divorce my husband if he disrespectfully brings her home. I’ve said this severally, no way! Even the condom, I will supply him with it cuz I need to protect myself indirectly too.” 

Matriach with the handle, @a_eyitemi, via a thread said women have a right to be upset over the thespians words. 

“Pete Edochie is an old man, yes, but his words make you reflect on the nonsense a lot of Nigerian women endured and still endure given how he’s still dishing out company secrets of the patriarchy to young men and continuing the cycle. So people have a right to be upset.

 “And all this “it was his time” talk, Nigeria is not progressive enough for you to be saying all this, we are still living in the same time. No reason say feminist dey Twitter.

 “A lot of Nigerian women are still living through it. So pipe down. The man said men of our time were real men, the women would be in pieces, that’s a lot of people’s mom’s and aunties and sisters etc, they saw all these things and we still continue to see it. It’s not fake outrage, it’s our reality,” she tweeted.
