Britney Spears’ father said he is ‘sorry to see his daughter in so much pain’, following bombshell revelations about her conservatorship in court yesterday.
The legendary popstar spoke directly to a Los Angeles court on Wednesday to request that the conservatorship she has been under since 2008 be ended ‘without being evaluated’.
Speaking for the first time in the case since her team requested that her care manager Jodi Montgomery replace her father Jamie Spears as conservator, Britney compared the conservatorship to ‘abuse’ and claimed that she wanted to marry her boyfriend Sam Asghari and have a baby, but her conservator would not allow her to get her contraceptive intrauterine device (IUD) removed so she could become pregnant.
In a statement read out in court by his lawyer Vivian Lee Thoreen, Jamie, 68, said: ‘[Jamie] is sorry to see his daughter in so much pain. [He] loves his daughter and misses her very much.’
Jamie and Britney’s mother Lynne, 66, were on the phone with their attorneys, who joined the hearing virtually.
Britney, 39, also spoke to the court remotely.
Fans and those involved in the #FreeBritney movement were stunned as details of the hearing emerged last night, with Britney saying that she ‘cries every day’ and is ‘so angry’.
Of her father, the Toxic singer said: ‘[He] wants me to work and stay home. They need to be reminded they actually work for me.
‘My dad and anyone involved in this conservatorship, and my management who played a huge role in punishing me … they should be in jail. I don’t even drink alcohol. I should drink alcohol considering what they put my heart through.
‘I’m telling you again ’cause I’m not lying. I want to feel heard … [and have people] understand the depth and degree and the damage that they did to me back then. I want changes, I deserve changes. I was told I have to be sat down and evaluated again.
‘Ma’am, I didn’t know I could petition the conservatorship to end. I honestly didn’t know that. Honestly, I don’t think I owe anyone to be evaluated. I’ve done more than enough.
‘I don’t owe these people anything. I’ve roofed and clothed and fed people on the road. It’s demoralising what I’ve been through. I’ve never said it openly – I never thought anyone would believe me. I’m not lying. I just want my life back.
‘It’s been 13 years and it’s been enough. I want to be able to be heard. I’ve kept this in for so long – it’s not good for my heart. I’ve been so angry and I cry every day. For my sanity … I need to get it off my heart. The anger, all of it. The main reason why I’m here today is I want to end the conservatorship without being evaluated.’
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Brenda Penny thanked Spears for her ‘courageous’ words but made no ruling, with a long legal process likely before any decision is made on whether the conservatorship will end.
Jamie was granted control over his daughter’s personal and business affairs in 2008, after Britney was hospitalised due to concerns over her mental health.
While he is no longer currently acting as his daughter’s personal conservator, having stepped down in 2019 for ‘personal health reasons’, he remains in charge of her finances.
His attorney Thoreen previously said of the conservatorship: ‘Any time Britney wants to end her conservatorship, she can ask her lawyer to file a petition to terminate it; she has always had this right but in 13 years has never exercised it.
‘Britney knows that her Daddy loves her, and that he will be there for her whenever and if she needs him, just as he always has been – conservatorship or not.’
