Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale has subtly responded to remarks made by Jamie Carragher regarding his applause for David Raya during the North London derby.
Ramsdale, who has been benched for Arsenal's last three games, was replaced by summer recruit Raya from Brentford. Raya kept clean sheets in his first two appearances for the Gunners and made a remarkable save to deny Brennan Johnson during the 2-2 draw against Tottenham on Sunday.
Ramsdale, watching the game from the substitutes' bench, applauded Raya's save. However, Carragher compared Ramsdale's applause to a losing Oscar nominee clapping for the winner, stating: "I thought it was like the Oscars. You know, when someone loses the Oscar and they start clapping and smiling for the other person. I was laughing when I saw that. He's absolutely devastated at that really."
Ramsdale's father, Nick, retorted by calling Carragher a 'disgrace' and urged him to 'show some class'. Now, Ramsdale himself seems to have subtly replied to Carragher's analysis via his Instagram story.
The first photo shows Ramsdale, also on the substitutes' bench that day, celebrating a goal with his Bournemouth team-mates during a win at the Vitality Stadium, with reserve goalkeeper Mark Travers in goal. The second photo shows Ramsdale celebrating with his current Arsenal team-mates - indicating that team spirit and competitiveness among the goalkeepers are alive and well.
Raya echoed these sentiments in an interview before the derby: "I've just been selected the last two games. That is just the choice of the gaffer - that is his choice, not my choice and when Aaron comes in, he will need to also fight for the team and to win games. He has been great, he is a great team-mate, a leader as well. He is a great lad and a great keeper as well. We are team-mates and that is the main thing."
