Editorial: Condemning the EFCC's Tactics Against Yahaya Bello

The recent events involving the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and former Governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, have raised serious concerns about the agency's conduct and its adherence to due process. Allegations of money laundering and misappropriation of state funds against the former governor are indeed serious and deserve thorough investigation. However, the actions of the EFCC have unfortunately veered into what can only be described as harassment, intimidation, and political grandstanding.

Yahaya Bello, despite the cloud of accusations, voluntarily presented himself at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, accompanied by Governor Usman Ododo and his supporters. In an unusual turn of events, the former governor was asked to leave, with the Commission providing no formal comment. Yet, just a few hours later, the EFCC issued a statement declaring Bello a wanted man. Even more alarming was the sudden siege on the Kogi Government Lodge in Asokoro later that night, with EFCC operatives reportedly firing sporadically in an attempt to arrest him.

This behavior is unacceptable for an institution that prides itself on upholding the law. It is essential to note that Yahaya Bello did not resist the EFCC's authority, nor did he evade interrogation. He made himself available for questioning, a gesture that should have been met with due process, not a dramatic show of force in the dead of night. The EFCC's actions were not only reckless but also indicative of an agency that may be straying from its mandate to combat corruption and instead, pursuing political vendettas.

The conduct of the EFCC in this instance demands condemnation. It reeks of Gestapo-like tactics that have no place in a democracy. It is troubling that an agency entrusted with such significant power would resort to such heavy-handed methods without justification. More importantly, these actions cast doubt on the integrity of the EFCC's operations, fueling perceptions that the agency is being weaponized for political purposes rather than fighting corruption impartially.

Nigerians deserve transparency and fairness from the EFCC, not the spectacle of violence and intimidation. If the agency truly has a case against Yahaya Bello, it should present the evidence in court, follow due process, and allow the law to take its course. The Commission must not allow itself to become a tool for political persecution, as this undermines its credibility and erodes public trust in the fight against corruption.

In light of these events, we call on the relevant authorities to thoroughly investigate the actions of the EFCC operatives involved in this incident and ensure that the rule of law is respected. If nothing is done, this situation may set a dangerous precedent, where individuals are targeted based on political affiliations rather than evidence of wrongdoing.

The EFCC must be held accountable for its actions, and it must remember that its ultimate responsibility is to the people of Nigeria, not to political interests. The fight against corruption can only succeed when it is conducted with integrity, fairness, and strict adherence to the law.
