The American University of Nigeria (AUN) celebrated its 16th Annual Founder’s Day and 20th Anniversary on Saturday in a grand ceremony that underscored its commitment to academic excellence and visionary leadership. The event, held at the Lamido Aliyu Musdafa Commencement Hall in Yola, drew a distinguished audience, including political leaders, diplomats, scholars, and traditional rulers.
Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate and former Governor, Peter Obi, delivered the keynote address, lauding the institution’s transformative impact. Obi, a long-time ally of AUN founder and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, praised Atiku’s unwavering dedication to education, calling it "a calling, not a venture for profit."
The American Embassy in Nigeria, represented by Deputy Ambassador David Greene, commended AUN’s role in fostering education and community development in Adamawa State. Greene described the university as a beacon of hope for the region, particularly through its humanitarian and educational initiatives.
AUN President Dewayne Frazier reflected on the institution’s 20-year journey, attributing its success to Atiku’s vision. “We celebrate two decades of transformative education and community service,” he said, emphasizing AUN’s role in nurturing global leaders.
A highlight of the event was the recognition of exceptional students by the AUN Honour Society, which also announced an annual STEM competition for Adamawa State secondary schools, aiming to inspire young innovators.
In his keynote address, Obi called on Nigerian youth to embrace leadership and reject divisions based on ethnicity or religion. Citing Chinua Achebe, he emphasized that Nigeria’s challenges stem from leadership deficits. He urged students to prioritize competence, compassion, and vision in their pursuits.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of a commemorative book to Atiku, Peter Obi, and Board of Trustees Chairman Senator Ben Obi. Atiku expressed gratitude for the milestones achieved, stating, “This celebration marks not just a milestone, but a movement. It is a testament to the power of vision and collaboration.”
As AUN looks to the future, its leadership reaffirmed its commitment to excellence in education and societal impact, promising that the next chapter will be even more transformative.
