Controversy as OYPM Chairman, Oluwaseun Ogunniyi, removed from Ose Concerned Citizen’s Forum

Ose Local Government is currently witnessing growing tension following the sudden and controversial removal of the Chairman of the Ose Youths Progressive Movement (OYPM), Hon. Oluwaseun A. Ogunniyi, from the Ose Concerned Citizen’s Forum. 

His removal, allegedly for sharing a WhatsApp invitation link to encourage youth participation in the OYPM, has sparked widespread criticism and concerns over freedom of association and expression.

Allegations of Constitutional Violations

Hon. Ogunniyi’s removal has been described by many as unlawful, undemocratic, and a clear violation of fundamental human rights. Legal and political observers point to the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which explicitly guarantees citizens the right to freely associate and express their opinions.

According to Section 40 of the Nigerian Constitution:

"Every person shall be entitled to assemble freely and associate with other persons, and in particular, he may form or belong to any political party, trade union, or any other association for the protection of his interests."

Similarly, Section 39(1) affirms:

"Every person shall be entitled to freedom of expression, including freedom to hold opinions and to receive and impart ideas and information without interference."

Critics argue that removing Ogunniyi from the forum simply for sharing an open invitation to a youth movement not only violates these constitutional provisions but also sets a dangerous precedent for youth engagement and leadership in Ose Local Government.

Backlash from Concerned Citizens

Since the news broke, concerned citizens and youth groups have taken to social media and community platforms to express their dismay and opposition to what they describe as an authoritarian move. Many believe that the decision to remove Hon. Ogunniyi is politically motivated and aimed at stifling youth activism and participation in leadership.

“This is a gross abuse of power,” said a concerned resident. “A forum that claims to represent concerned citizens should promote dialogue and inclusivity, not punish individuals for sharing lawful and progressive initiatives.”

Others argue that the removal is an attempt to control which organizations youths can or cannot join, a move they say is reminiscent of dictatorship and against democratic principles.

Call for Reinstatement and Immediate Redress

In response to the controversy, youth leaders and community stakeholders have called for the immediate reinstatement of Hon. Ogunniyi to the forum. They also urge local authorities, traditional rulers, and respected individuals to intervene before the situation escalates further.

“This act does not only violate constitutional rights but also threatens unity and progress among the youth of Ose,” said a youth activist. “Leadership should be about inclusiveness, not suppression of ideas.”

As the debate continues, many are watching closely to see whether the leadership of the Ose Concerned Citizen’s Forum will reverse its decision or further entrench its stance. What remains clear, however, is that this controversy has ignited a larger conversation about democracy, youth participation, and the protection of fundamental rights in Ose Local Government.
