A senior European Union official says that the bloc will deliver a "very strong message" through an aid package for Ukraine, as Russia and the United States appear to be nearing efforts to resolve the conflict in the region.
European Commissioner for defence Andrius Kubilius hinted on Friday that the bloc will put forward a new package of aid for Ukraine on Monday, which marks the third anniversary of the war.
“We are discussing … all the possibilities which would allow us, in a very urgent way, to send a very strong message to Ukrainians and to the world that we are standing together with Ukraine,” he said.
The new aid package came after the US government held a meeting with Russian officials this week in Riyadh on the fate of the Ukraine war, without the presence of Ukrainian or European representatives.
Although Kubilius refused to elaborate on the contents of the new aid package, rumors are circulating that it will amount to tens of billions of Euros.
The new US administration of Donald Trump has signaled that it will decrease support for Ukraine.
On Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to discuss the Ukraine war.
Also this week, Trump questioned the legitimacy of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelenskiy by calling him a “dictator”.
Opposition to Ukraine aid has also been increasing among the public and politicians in many European countries.
The governments of Hungary and Slovakia have been the most vocal in their opposition to the aid to Ukraine, with Hungary even initially vetoing a $54 billion EU Aid package last year.
Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico was elected on an election platform that included promises to end aid to Ukraine in 2023.
In 2024, he became a victim of an assassination attempt by a supporter of Ukraine.
Calin Georgescu, another politician opposed to aid to Ukraine, managed to achieve first place in the 2024 Romanian presidential election.
The election results were later annulled by the EU state on the basis of social media posts that alleged Russia supported Georgescu.
