The Lagos State House of Assembly has strongly refuted claims that twenty-seven of its members are planning to defect from the ruling party to the opposition Labour Party (LP). The Assembly described the report as false, misleading, and a deliberate attempt to misinform the public.
In a statement issued by Hon. (Otunba) Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode, Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Strategy, and Security, the Assembly dismissed the publication as an attempt to sow discord within the legislative body and the state at large.
"The recent developments in the House, including the removal of the erstwhile Speaker, Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, and the election of Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the new Speaker, are purely internal matters conducted in accordance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, as amended. These actions do not, in any way, indicate that members are considering defection," the statement read.
The Assembly reaffirmed its members' unwavering commitment to the ruling party and its leadership, stressing that there is no crisis warranting defection.
"We were elected under the leadership of our great party, and we remain united and focused on delivering our mandate to the people of Lagos State. The falsehood being spread is the handiwork of agents of destabilization who seek to create unnecessary tension and division within the Assembly," the statement continued.
The lawmakers urged party leaders and supporters to disregard the rumors and assured them of their dedication to the party's agenda. They also emphasized that any internal disagreements within the House would be resolved through peaceful and democratic mechanisms.
Furthermore, the Assembly called on media organizations to uphold journalistic ethics by verifying information before publication to prevent the spread of misinformation.
The statement concluded with a firm reassurance that the Lagos State House of Assembly remains stable, focused, and committed to governance and service delivery to the people of Lagos State.
