The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced the launch of its contactless passport application system in Europe, the United Kingdom, and Ireland as part of ongoing reforms spearheaded by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo.
A statement issued on Wednesday by NIS spokesperson, AS Akinlabi, confirmed that the initiative, set to commence on February 7, 2025, will allow Nigerians living abroad to apply for and renew their passports online without the need to visit a physical passport center.
NIS Comptroller General, Kemi Nanna Nandap, highlighted this development during a courtesy visit to the Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, in Abuja. She noted that the initiative builds on the successful rollout of the contactless passport application system in Canada on November 5, 2024.
“For clarity, the Contactless Passport Application, available on Google Play Store (NIS mobile), enables Nigerians to renew their passports without biometric enrollment at a passport office,” the statement explained.
Reaffirming its dedication to innovation and efficiency, the NIS emphasized that the move marks a major milestone in improving service delivery for Nigerians worldwide.
Describing the initiative as a game-changer, Dabiri-Erewa expressed NiDCOM’s commitment to supporting and collaborating with the NIS to ensure the system's success.
“This is a crucial step towards secure, seamless, and efficient travel document management for Nigerians in the diaspora,” she said.
