The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the troops' determination to secure Zamfara State, assuring that notorious bandit leader, Bello Turji, will soon be eliminated. Oluyede made this statement while briefing journalists in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, at the Headquarters of Operation Fansan Yamma.
He emphasized that Turji, who is wanted for his criminal activities, has been on the run, but the army will continue to pursue him. “Bello Turji is on the run as we speak and for everywhere he goes, we follow him there. Let him keep running, it is just a matter of time, he would be removed from the space,” Oluyede said.
The army chief highlighted the recent successes of Nigerian troops in the region, revealing that several bandit leaders have been killed in the past few months. He noted that the army is committed to improving security and protecting lives and properties. “We are pursuing them and we intend to continue with that. It is the same thing with the fight against the bandits. In the last few months, we have killed prominent bandit leaders like Samaila, Boga, and the likes of Boderi. All those ones are dead. We are still pursuing them and to see how we can make the entire North-West very safe,” he added.
Oluyede acknowledged the challenges faced by the troops in the region but expressed confidence in their ability to overcome them. He also urged Nigerians to assist the army and other security agencies by providing timely information.
During his visit, Oluyede inspected the quarter guard under tight security and received an operational briefing from Theatre Commander, Major General Oluyinka Soyele. This visit marks his first since his appointment on October 30, 2024. It comes at a time when troops are intensifying efforts to combat banditry and other security issues in the North-West region. Operation Fasan Yamma plays a vital role in the Nigerian Army’s ongoing efforts to restore peace and stability to a region plagued by increasing cases of banditry, kidnapping, and other security challenges.
