The Russian Defense Ministry has announced that its forces have taken control of the villages of Nadiivka, Novosilka, and Novoocheretuvate in Donetsk, eastern Ukraine, advancing further toward the central Dnipropetrovsk region.
According to the ministry, Nadiivka fell under Russian control following an operation by the Tsentr (Center) group of forces, while Novosilka was seized by the Vostok (Eastern) group.
In total, Russia claims to have captured six Ukrainian settlements in Donetsk and Kharkiv, as well as reclaiming a village in its own Kursk region over the past week.
The Russian Defense Ministry also reported on Friday that Russian troops conducted 11 strikes this week using precision weapons and drones, targeting Ukrainian military infrastructure and energy facilities supplying the country's military-industrial complex.
The Russian gains come as Ukraine is apparently losing support from the United States under the new Donald Trump administration. Top US and Russian diplomats met on Tuesday in Riyadh.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told reporters that “the conversation was very useful,” adding, “We not only listened, but also heard each other.”
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed Lavrov’s remarks, saying that the two sides agreed broadly to pursue three goals, including creating a high-level team to support Ukraine peace talks.
Russia has captured around 20 percent of Ukraine and continues to steadily gain territory in the east, stressing that its “special military operation” is a response to the existential threat posed by Kiev’s pursuit of NATO membership, while Ukraine and the West label Russia’s actions as an imperialist land grab.
