Margaret Ekpeyong Okon, the Assistant State Woman Leader, South, of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has resigned from the party, further intensifying political shifts within Cross River State.
Her resignation comes just 48 hours after Emana Amawhe, the PDP’s deputy governorship candidate for the 2024 general elections, also stepped down from the party.
In a letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of Edem Odo Ward, Akpabuyo Local Government Area, Okon expressed her gratitude for the opportunities she had while serving the party. She highlighted her journey from a ward executive member to councillor and most recently as a member of the state executive council and assistant state woman leader for the South.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to have served the party in various capacities, from being a Ward Exco member to serving as a Councillor, and most recently, as a member of the State Executive Council/ Assistant State Woman Leader, South; a position I have held until today,” she wrote. “These experiences have been invaluable, and I deeply appreciate the trust and support I received throughout my journey.”
Okon further noted that the insights gained from her time in the PDP would shape her future endeavours, adding that she remains committed to serving her community and advocating for progress.
Her departure marks another significant development in the state’s political landscape, following Amawhe’s exit, as internal realignments continue within the PDP.
