Dr. Lila Abassi, 46, was fired from a renowned New York hospital for rejecting Zionist propaganda and defending anti-Israeli resistance.
A New York City doctor has been fired for criticizing Israel’s genocidal actions in Gaza and Lebanon and for expressing support for resistance groups, following pressure from the city council.
Dr. Lila Abassi, an assistant professor of medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital, was fired earlier this month after a probe into a series of online pro-Palestine posts, a hospital spokesperson confirmed this week.
Abassi, 46, expressed support for Hamas and Hezbollah in her posts and hailed them as “noble resistance and freedom fighters,” referred to the Israeli army as a “plague,” slammed Israel for “slaughtering babies,” and rejected false claims of rape during Hamas retaliatory Operation Al-Aqsa Flood (Strom) on October 7, 2023.
“Please show me actual rape video,” Abassi wrote in a Facebook doctors group, using the pseudonym “Kluver Bucy,” the name for a rare brain disorder that affects memory and behavior and may cause eating disorders, seizures and dementia.
She also asserted that Israel was responsible for “massacr[ing] more people on 10/7 than [were] killed by Hamas.”
Following weeks of pressure from City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov (R-Brooklyn), Abassi was terminated after initially being instructed to delete her social media account.
Councilwoman Vernikov advocated for more severe consequences upon learning of Abassi’s posts.
Vernikov, who is an extremist pro-Israeli Trumpist, claimed that Abassi’s support for resistance groups made Jewish patients feel unsafe in her care.
After the reports, Mount Sinai initiated a probe that ultimately led to Dr. Abassi’s dismissal, according to the hospital’s spokesperson.
Abassi, MD, MPH, received her medical degree from St. George’s University in 2011, did her residency at SUNY Downstate Medical Center, and received her BA in Anthropology from the University of California - Santa Barbara.
