The Rivers State House of Assembly has issued an arrest warrant for the Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Justice Adolphus Enebeli (rtd), after he failed to appear before lawmakers within a 72-hour deadline.
During Monday’s plenary, the Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, took action following Enebeli’s refusal to honor their summons. The lawmakers are investigating his role in last year’s annulled local government election.
Enebeli had scheduled a fresh local government poll for August 9, 2025, after the Supreme Court nullified the previous election held on October 5, 2024. Meanwhile, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has called for dialogue with the Assembly to discuss the Supreme Court’s ruling.
The apex court had recently reaffirmed the legitimacy of the Amaewhule-led Assembly and ordered it to resume its legislative functions. It also barred the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and other federal agencies from releasing funds to the Rivers State Government until it complies with court orders.
