Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has said it would be a total disaster, if Nigeria fails to make it to the 2026 World Cup just as he noted that the next game against Rwanda will determine the team’s progress.
Speaking in Ilorin on Saturday, the most successful Super Eagles FIFA World Cup striker said such a mishap would affect a whole generation of talented players in the country.
The former CSKA Moscow and Leicester City of England striker was hosted by the Kwara State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) at Taiwo Awoniyi Sports Media Center/Secretariat in Ilorin.
He said: “The Super Eagles are in a very difficult situation right but we believe in ourselves that we can still scale through.
“Super Eagles cannot be absent from the 2026 World Cup.
” It is going to be a big disaster for Nigerian players not to be at the World Cup.
Super Eagles are currently fifth in Group C with three points from four matches behind Rwanda, South Africa, Benin Republic, and Lesotho with Zimbabwe trailing.
But the most capped Super Eagles player still believes that the Rwanda game for which he has been invited to camp is key to turning around Eagles’ fortune.
“The important game is Rwanda. If we can get the three points from that match, it’s going to be a turning point for us. But it is not just a job for the Super Eagles alone.
“Every Nigerian must be involved because we need their support,” he said.
It will be recalled that since their debut at the 1994 FIFA World Cup, Nigeria has attended all but the 2006 and 2022 editions.
Meanwhile, Musa commended teammate Awoniyi for supporting Kwara SWAN with a befitting secretariat.
“I am going to say a very big thank you to my younger brother, Taiwo Awoniyi, for this magnificent building he has built for SWAN.
“Every footballer needs to learn from what Awoniyi has done.”
