Iran has strongly condemned US President Donald Trump's latest threats against the country, describing them as a flagrant violation of international law and principles of the UN Charter.
Iran's permanent ambassador made the remarks in a letter sent to the UN chief and the president of the Security Council on Monday.
Amir Saeid Iravani said that since taking office, Trump has disregarded and violated all international norms by threatening independent nations with the use of force.
On Saturday, Trump said that Iran would be bombed if it did not make a deal with the United States.
“If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing,” he said in an interview with NBC News. He also threatened to punish Iran with what he called “secondary tariffs.”
“Such reckless and belligerent statements constitute a flagrant violation of international law and the core principles of the United Nations Charter, particularly Article 2(4), which explicitly prohibits the threat or use of force against any state’s territorial integrity or political independence,” Iravani said.
“The President of the United States, since taking office in January 2025, has disregarded and violated all international norms and principles upon which the United Nations was founded. He consistently threatens independent nations with the use of force, a pattern that sets a dangerous precedent in international relations,” Iravani said.
He urged the Security Council to unequivocally condemn Trump's threats as violations of international law and the UN Charter.
“It is deeply regrettable and concerning that the United States, a permanent member of the UN Security Council, blatantly ignores its obligations under the UN Charter and wields military power as its primary tool of coercion to advance its political and geopolitical objectives,” he stated.
He warned that the Council’s failure to act risks catastrophic consequences not only for the region but also for international peace and security.
“In light of these grave violations and their potential consequences, the Islamic Republic of Iran urges the UN Security Council to fulfill its responsibility under the UN Charter to maintain international peace and security,” he stated.
Iravani reiterated Iran's firm commitment to regional peace, stability, and security, stressing that Tehran has no interest in conflict or escalation.
He warned that Iran would respond swiftly and decisively to any act of aggression or attack by the US or its proxy, the Israeli regime, against its sovereignty, territorial integrity, or national interests.
Iravani noted that Washington would be fully responsible for the grave consequences of any hostile action.
On March 7, Trump announced he had written to Iran to call for nuclear negotiations and threaten military action. The letter was delivered to Tehran on March 12 by UAE presidential adviser Anwar Gargash.
Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei said on March 21 that US threats “will get them nowhere” and warned of reciprocal measures “if they do anything malign” against Iran.
Ayatollah Khamenei also dismissed Trump’s outreach for talks, which he said was an attempt to deceive global public opinion by portraying the United States as willing to negotiate while framing Iran as unwilling to engage.
