[OPINION] Nigeria Youth: The Engine of Our Industrial Future

By Dr. Femi Akinkuebi

Nigeria finds itself at a pivotal moment. Despite bold ambitions for economic transformation, the country remains entangled in familiar constraints—overreliance on crude oil, a consumption-heavy economy, and a manufacturing sector that continues to fall short of its potential. While these problems are not new, they are not irreversible. The real tragedy would be overlooking our greatest untapped asset: a youthful, energetic population with the capacity to ignite an industrial resurgence.

Industrialisation is not one path among many—it is the proven route through which nations have built sustainable wealth, reduced unemployment, and expanded global influence. From the factories of 18th-century Europe to Asia’s rise in the 21st century, the lesson is clear: producing value creates prosperity. Nigeria’s journey down this road, however, remains underdeveloped.

Multiple obstacles have long held back Nigeria’s industrial sector. Poor electricity supply, weak infrastructure, inconsistent policies, and limited access to capital have discouraged local manufacturing. In many cases, importing goods is easier and cheaper than producing them at home. Despite having rich deposits of raw materials, Nigeria continues to export them unprocessed, only to buy back refined versions at higher prices.

But as the world advances, Nigeria must not stay stagnant. While smart technologies and automation redefine manufacturing in other regions, many Nigerian factories remain idle or underutilized. This widening gap is concerning—but not hopeless.

Nigeria’s youth could be the game-changer. With over 60% of the population under the age of 30, the country is home to more than 130 million young people—more than the total populations of several industrialized nations. If properly engaged, this demographic could be the driving force behind Nigeria’s industrial future.

Other nations have demonstrated how investing in young people can lead to remarkable economic transformations. Post-war Japan invested in discipline and education, producing generations of engineers and innovators. South Korea’s focus on manufacturing and youth empowerment turned it into a global tech leader within decades. China’s industrial boom, initiated through strategic reforms, was powered by millions of young workers in special economic zones. In Africa, Ethiopia has begun to replicate this model through industrial parks that have created thousands of youth jobs and increased exports.

Nigeria has the numbers. What’s needed now is a focused strategy. This includes revamping technical and vocational education, fostering youth-led entrepreneurship, and ensuring access to tools, finance, and industrial workspaces. Industrial hubs should be spread across states—not limited to major cities—so that every young Nigerian has a chance to contribute.

Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are especially critical. Many youth-led ventures in agro-processing, fashion, waste recycling, and construction materials already show promise. With proper support—such as tax breaks, friendly regulations, and easier market access—these businesses could scale and reshape Nigeria’s industrial base.

Technology must also be leveraged. Digital tools for logistics, production, and sales are helping young innovators bypass traditional roadblocks. Platforms for e-commerce and inventory management now allow small producers to reach national and international buyers.

However, the burden of transformation cannot rest solely on young shoulders. Government must provide consistent policies, reliable infrastructure, and targeted incentives. Financial institutions must rethink lending models to support innovation. Industry leaders should mentor upcoming entrepreneurs. Schools and training centers must align their programs with the evolving needs of the industrial sector.

A unified national approach is crucial. Industrialisation should be seen not just as policy, but as a long-term mission—one that unites regions, transcends politics, and inspires pride. It must shape how we educate, how we invest, and how we engage with the global economy.

Nigeria possesses the resources, manpower, and potential. What remains is the vision and commitment to turn these strengths into industrial power. We must move from consumption to creation, from import dependence to export leadership, and from short-term fixes to lasting, youth-led innovation.

The world isn’t waiting, and neither should Nigeria. Our young people are ready. The future can be built—by them, with them, and for them. All we need is the will to begin.
